Today's 'Why Does My Dog Do That?' Wednesday isn't so much a question about dog behavior, as it is advice to keep your dog safe.We are experiencing extremely hot weather across most of our nation this week, which brings up the question - Can Dogs Get Sunburned?
The answer is mostly definitely yes, and they can even get skin cancer. Animals do get sunburned just like people do, and it is just as painful for them as it is for us when we get burned. Dogs are especially vulnerable to sunburn if they have white, or light colored ears, have a light colored nose, and if their fur is thin enough that sun can get through to the skin. Dogs often have a small amount of covering on their snouts, and sometimes their noses are light colored, rather than pigmented.
Our pets that are groomed to have short clipped coats may get sunburned because their skin is exposed. We might not notice it so much, but they will notice it when they start itching and burning from too much sun exposure.
You can use sunscreen on your dog. It is best to use a children's waterproof product with no scent on hairless areas, such as the tips of the ears and the top of the nose. Basically, anywhere you see skin, you should put sunscreen on him. Chihuahuas, who often have very thin amounts of hair, should be especially careful in the sun.
You should also dress your dog when he goes out to play in the park. This will form a barrier between his back and the sun. The don't have to be bundled up in sweaters, but a light tshirt or jacket will do a lot of good in preventing the sun from scorching your dog's skin.
If you are taking your dog to the beach or river, where you will spend a great amount of time exposed to the bright sunlight, consider get your dog some goggles or a sun visor, to protect their eyes also. This may take some getting used to, but most dogs will get to a point where they will wear these items without fuss.
Our dogs need sunshine, just as we do, to be healthy. Just use wisdom and caution in protecting their skin and eyes from the harmful damage that overexposure to the sun rays can cause.
Summertime brings us great opportunities to spend quality time with our dogs, exploring our great outdoors. Certainly take advantage of this, but plan ahead to keep your dog safe and comfortable.
